Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, OK

I’m a little behind on my blog posts. It’s been a busy few weeks. Good busy though. As my brother Ricky reminded me, this road trip is about being unproductive, so being behind on my blog posts fits the theme. And I don’t even feel bad about being behind, which means the road trip is working.

Last Tuesday, I drove to Oklahoma. It was just a one night stop on my way to Kansas City. I had to drive through the Texas Panhandle to get there and I felt like I came full circle. I was back in the same state where I started my road trip, though Texas is so big that I was 8 h 45 min from Houston.

I did a pretty good job picking my one night stops on this trip. I had Okoboji in Iowa, the town with the nicest people, and this time I stayed in Medicine Park, which was also a very cute town. I stayed in a human-sized birdhouse by the river.

On Wednesday, I gave myself an hour to see the Wildlife Refuge before heading to Kansas City. I drove to the top of Mt Scott to enjoy the views. After that, I had to pick between the Parallel Forest, where trees were planted in straight lines exactly 6 ft apart, and the Holy City of the Wichitas, a replica of ancient Jerusalem. I was so intrigued by the randomness of a replica of ancient Jerusalem in the middle of a wildlife refuge, that I chose that over the forest.

I wish I would have picked the forest. The Holy City wasn’t that great. There were replicas of a few of the sites that were key to the Passion of Jesus, but they don’t look cohesive. It just looks like buildings that were placed randomly on a piece of land. I don’t completely regret seeing it though. Even today, I am still amused by the randomness of its presense there.

That was all I had time for. After buying my magnet at the visitor center, I drove to Kansas City.
